I am aware of his prior partnership as Lyon and Healy, but there is nothing on this one that identifies as a Lyon and Healy model either. I got the same response from the owners of Atlanta Vintage Guitars, who know their stuff when it comes to music. The gentleman in Rome, GA who re-fretted this banjo last year was 90+ years old, and he said its the oldest 5 String Banjo he's ever seen. I have had no luck finding any information thus far on its age or design.

All info from the Washburn Guitar Company website states serial numbers range from 4-20 digits. Next to it is a woodburned stamp of a guitar and belt-ribbon surrounding it with the name George Washburn in the border.

The thing that really gets me is the serial number on the back, woodburned stamped into the body/ bridge support, that is only 3 digits: 243. It has super detailed leaves, blossoms, and stalks that might have copper or bronze inlay? The headstock also has this pattern, and I'm assuming it has the original tuners and pegs. I've seen some fantastic pearl inlay on fretboards, but this is absolutely mesmerizing. There are several unique features on this banjo that have puzzled me to how "custom" or even modified it may be.

I am uncertain about the type of wood used for the ring, but it appears to be slightly darker than the neck. It's an open back, 10" Dia body, with an Ebony fretboard and either Maple or Walnut (guess) neck. Through the years, it was passed down to several family members, one of whom was a regular on the Arthur Smith Radio Show on WBT Radio in Charlotte, NC in the early 1950's. It was originally owned (as far back as I can trace, by word of mouth and one photograph to justify lineage) by my Great-Great-Great Grandmother in Western North Carolina. I am a recent recipient of a George Washburn 5 String Banjo.
